Chewing betel and areca in Vietnam derived since Hung Vuong
period, around 3,000 years ago. People need to prepare betel leaves called Trau
, slices of areca nuts called Cau, little tobacco and lime paste, mixed and chewed
together.

After a while of chewing the mixture turns into red color.
The taste is also mixed of bitter, sweet, and hot. Chew but not swallow the
liquid, they spit out sometimes. It is said that chewing betel & areca
freshens the breath, calms bad temper, and help digest food.
Chewing betel and nuts bring people to be closer. They start
telling a story by an invitation of chewing betel and nuts. This custom is not
only daily habit but also carried out at all kinds of ceremonies such as new year,
wedding, festival… Trau and Cau are contained inside wooden tray as offerings on
the ancestor’s altar.
