CHEWING BETEL LEAVES AND ARECA NUTS IN VIET COMMUNITY

Chewing betel and areca in Vietnam derived since Hung Vuong period, around 3,000 years ago. People need to prepare betel leaves called Trau , slices of areca nuts called Cau, little tobacco and lime paste, mixed and chewed together.

After a while of chewing the mixture turns into red color. The taste is also mixed of bitter, sweet, and hot. Chew but not swallow the liquid, they spit out sometimes. It is said that chewing betel & areca freshens the breath, calms bad temper, and help digest food.

Chewing betel and nuts bring people to be closer. They start telling a story by an invitation of chewing betel and nuts. This custom is not only daily habit but also carried out at all kinds of ceremonies such as new year, wedding, festival… Trau and Cau are contained inside wooden tray as offerings on the ancestor’s altar.

PERFUME PAGODA FESTIVAL IN SPRING

Perfume Pagoda Festival is held during the 6th day of the 1st Lunar month until the end of the 3rd lunar month. The festival is the longest one held in Vietnam.


During the Festival, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims arrive to admire the wonderful landscapes here with forest, mountains, river, caves, and traditional holy buildings. They pray Buddha and gods for good luck, wealth and happiness. On the boat or along the path to main pagoda the pilgrims say greetings “A Di Da Phat” or “Namo Amitabha Buddha”. It is more crowded by weekend and 1st or 15th day lunar month.



The wonderful complex of Perfume Pagoda was from 17th century and registered as National Heritage from 1962. Some of the best well-known temples are Den Trinh temple, Thien Tru Pagoda, Giai Oan Pagoda, and Huong Tich Pagoda. Tour Perfume Pagoda Festival starts at Ben Duc boat walf, then rowalong Yen river to the foot of mountain. From here you can hike up to Huong Tich Pagoda or choose cable car.

BAT TRANG CERAMICS IN HANOI ON THE RED RIVER BANK

Bat Trang Village is 10 km from Hanoi center, situated on the bank of the Red River. The history of the village is dated back to almost 1000 years. Villagers decided to settle here for they found very fine resource of white clay that is material for ceramic products.


The clay has been moved through filtering steps then is chosen for making products. With the selected clay, the potter’s wheel is used to mould the items. The temperature for baking and the glaze influence the color as well as product quality. They make wide range of products such as vases, bowls, paintings, plates, and other souvenirs…



You come and can learn how to form the ceramics. It takes only 20 minutes from Hanoi center to Bat Trang. Nowadays the ceramics products are not only supplied domestically but exported worldwide. Beside the visit to the village we can try delicious local food for lunch. Tour to Bat Trang village can be done by cycling along the Red River from Hanoi.
