VIETNAMESE SMOKING PIPE AND THUỐC LÀO

Thuốc lào plants are planted in Northern Delta to central part of Vietnam. The popular areas  for Thuốc lào are Hai Phong and Thanh Hóa provinces. Traditionally besides chewing betel plant and areca nut, Thuốc lào was also invited when guests arrived.

Vietnamese people use bamboo smoking pipe or Điếu cày for Thuốc lào. The pipe of Điếu cày is made of bamboo pipe with the average length of 40-60 cm. One end is closed and the other end is open for inhale.

A little amount of water is filled inside the pipe so when they smoke it creates bubbling sounds. Some pipes of Điếu cày look very artistic for nice carving motifs and curved shapes.

GIÒ LỤA (Silky Lean Meat Paste)

Gio lua is made from lean pig meat. Traditionally  the meat is pounded with a pestle until it becomes a sticky paste. The paste is wrapped inside fresh banana leaves then boiled till well cooked.
By the new year Gio lua is the dish that must be prepared.

VỊNH HẠ LONG 7-4 NGÀN NĂM VỀ TRƯỚC



Đây là giai đoạn đường bờ biển mở rộng nhất trong lịch sử địa chất Haloxen và Vịnh Hạ long hiện đại chính thức được hình thành. Và trước thời kỳ Haloxen này là các kỳ tiến hóa địa chất hình thành tầng đá vôi dày hàng ngàn mét  cách ngày nay 340-240 triệu năm, sự hình thành bồn trũng Hạ long khoảng 26-10 triệu năm trước, và sự hình thành đồng bằng đá vôi thời kỳ 2 triệu – 11 ngàn năm trước.



Sau khi bờ biển được mở rộng cực đại thì mực nước biển khá ổn định và có hiện tượng ăn mòn hóa học biển dạng hàm ếch trên các vách đá vôi. Nhưng các bạn có biết sự nâng cao của kiến tạo núi nhanh hơn tốc độ nâng chân tĩnh của mực nước biển do đó chúng ta thấy bằng chứng là các vỏ sò bám trên vách đá.

HANOI FLAG TOWER

The Flag Tower of Hanoi was built during period 1805-1812 under Nguyen Dynasty. The Tower survives almost intact, was constructed by ancient bricks. The Flag Tower is consisted of 3 base layers and one tower with the height of 41 m.

The Tower is an eight-sided cylinder and reach the height of 18,2 m. Three base layers are 3,1 m, 3,7 m, and 5,1 m high. There are staircase for guests to climb up for panoramic view of central Hanoi. The Tower is not only for nice city decoration but also watching tower by passing time. By August 1945, the success of Revolution, Hanoi people saw Vietnam National Flag hung on the top of the tower at the first time.

VISIT HANOI OPERA HOUSE


The House is 90 m long and 30 m wide and holds 900 seats. The ceiling is 30 m high with typical Greek style. The first and second floor have balcony. 


In here it is the major place for art performing in Hanoi. The House also overlooks August Revolution square. The house was refurbished to it’s original conditions in 1997 under the support of French Government.

The House was designed by two French architects, Harlay and Broyer. They used construction materials that suit local climate. The inner style of the House is also similar to other opera houses in Europe by 20 century.

In 2011 The Opera House and August Revolution square was recognized as National Heritage. There are around 400 art performances per year held in the House.

NGOC SON TEMPLE IN HANOI

Ngoc Son Temple is situated on Hoan Kiem lake, in the heart of Hanoi city. The temple was built on Ngoc or the Jade Islet. The temple is dedicated to Van Xuong who is considered as the brightest star in Vietnamese literature, and Tran Hung Dao, the national hero who led Vietnamese army to defeat Mongol aggressors in the 13th century.


Nguyen Van Sieu, Hanoi, scholar, contributed his effort to restore and extend the temple by 1860s. By the entrance of the temple is a large pen-shaped tower with 3 Chinese characters on it, Ta Thanh Thien or Write on the blue sky, that imply the height of a genuine and righteous person’s strength and will.




The temple open from 7 AM – 18PM daily. Please wear long trousers when visiting the temple. Move from main street of Dinh Tien Hoang you pass Thap But tower, then reach The Huc red bridge (the bridge receives morning sun beam), get though entrance gate to Ngoc Son Temple. Stop to pray in the yard by Tran Ba Pavilion. Next tothe temple it is a small house where Hanoi preserves a huge sort of tortoise that still live in Hoan Kiem lake.

Ngoc Son temple is one of the main attraction in the tour program named Hanoi city tour one day. The temple stay in the heart of Hanoi and by the edge of the bustling old quarter. Get there and walk around you can take nice photos or buy ticket for electrical car to explore the old Hanoi.

VIETNAM EMBROIDERY IN THE PAST AND TODAY.

In the past the embroidery products were mainly made for the upper class, temples, and pagoda.
But nowadays embroideries are also used for decorative purposes. Besides embroidering by hand people also use new tech to create the motifs on the surface of table cloth, pillowcases, bed sheet, paintings of landscape and people.

The embroidery originates from Quat Dong village in Hanoi since 15th century, Dalat city, and Hue Imperial city. Today the embroidery companies and villages not only supply the products for domestic needs but also for export and international tourists who love folk arts of Vietnam.

CHEWING BETEL LEAVES AND ARECA NUTS IN VIET COMMUNITY

Chewing betel and areca in Vietnam derived since Hung Vuong period, around 3,000 years ago. People need to prepare betel leaves called Trau , slices of areca nuts called Cau, little tobacco and lime paste, mixed and chewed together.

After a while of chewing the mixture turns into red color. The taste is also mixed of bitter, sweet, and hot. Chew but not swallow the liquid, they spit out sometimes. It is said that chewing betel & areca freshens the breath, calms bad temper, and help digest food.

Chewing betel and nuts bring people to be closer. They start telling a story by an invitation of chewing betel and nuts. This custom is not only daily habit but also carried out at all kinds of ceremonies such as new year, wedding, festival… Trau and Cau are contained inside wooden tray as offerings on the ancestor’s altar.

PERFUME PAGODA FESTIVAL IN SPRING

Perfume Pagoda Festival is held during the 6th day of the 1st Lunar month until the end of the 3rd lunar month. The festival is the longest one held in Vietnam.


During the Festival, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims arrive to admire the wonderful landscapes here with forest, mountains, river, caves, and traditional holy buildings. They pray Buddha and gods for good luck, wealth and happiness. On the boat or along the path to main pagoda the pilgrims say greetings “A Di Da Phat” or “Namo Amitabha Buddha”. It is more crowded by weekend and 1st or 15th day lunar month.



The wonderful complex of Perfume Pagoda was from 17th century and registered as National Heritage from 1962. Some of the best well-known temples are Den Trinh temple, Thien Tru Pagoda, Giai Oan Pagoda, and Huong Tich Pagoda. Tour Perfume Pagoda Festival starts at Ben Duc boat walf, then rowalong Yen river to the foot of mountain. From here you can hike up to Huong Tich Pagoda or choose cable car.

BAT TRANG CERAMICS IN HANOI ON THE RED RIVER BANK

Bat Trang Village is 10 km from Hanoi center, situated on the bank of the Red River. The history of the village is dated back to almost 1000 years. Villagers decided to settle here for they found very fine resource of white clay that is material for ceramic products.


The clay has been moved through filtering steps then is chosen for making products. With the selected clay, the potter’s wheel is used to mould the items. The temperature for baking and the glaze influence the color as well as product quality. They make wide range of products such as vases, bowls, paintings, plates, and other souvenirs…



You come and can learn how to form the ceramics. It takes only 20 minutes from Hanoi center to Bat Trang. Nowadays the ceramics products are not only supplied domestically but exported worldwide. Beside the visit to the village we can try delicious local food for lunch. Tour to Bat Trang village can be done by cycling along the Red River from Hanoi.
